On December 6, fishermen, bankers, and sailors honored St Nicholas which according to tradition would help sailors and fishers when they are out on the seas. They believe that St Nicholas is the master of the seas and winds. To honor him they will make a traditional dish called Nikulden which is oven-baked carp stuffed with rice, raisns, walnuts, and herbs. It is tradition that the fish bone be turned to ash and either thrown in the river or burried. Bulgarian people believe that this will bring good luck to the family.
I think that this is a very interesting tradition. It reminds me of the American tradition of splitting a wish bone and making a wish on the part of the bone that is the biggest, in hopes that it will bring good luck and well being to the person making the wish.
This is a very important part of their culture because it is supposed to bring them good luck and well being. Since Bulgaria is fishing based this tradition is a big part of their culture.
