The abortion law that was signed into effect in 2006 is said to be one of the strictest in the world. It was said to be designed in an attempt to draw the Catholic voters attention since it was an election year. Now that the elections are over though, people say that they are too strict. Nicaragua shows to have more maternity related deaths than any other Latin American country, and the numbers only continue to rise. The law states that it does not matter if the mother was raped, or in danger. There is now a sense of fear associated with pregnacy in Nicaragua.
This is an important article because it shows how powerful a system of government can be when during an election. The government, instead of what might be good for the people only do what will benefit those people who are being elected. Politicians can be corrupt, when only worring about who will be elected next. They aren't doing what they need to do, and what people are so desperately crying out for. I can't help but think that this is what many other countries could be facing or will be facing in the near future.
This article shows the power of Nicaragua's government. When in an election year occurs there is seen to be change, but what about the rest of the time? Is the only reason there is change due to upcoming elections? Politicians only seek to better themselves instead of doing what is best for the people. It is now up to the government to determine what is "right" and how to better the law in place in order to protect its people.
